Enhancing GI Oncology Outcomes Through Patient-Provider Collaboration

At the 2026 ASCO Gastrointestinal Cancers Symposium Keynote Lecture, Dr. W. Kimryn Rathmell will emphasize the importance of intentional collaboration between patients and providers to improve cancer care decision-making and access.

Dr. Rathmell will highlight the concept of “dyad partnerships,” in which patients are supported by both local providers and specialists at academic centers. These collaborative relationships help patients access cutting-edge insights, participate in research, and receive care aligned with their personal goals—whether in the community or at specialized centers.

She will also discuss innovations from her time at the NCI and The James, including decentralized and telehealth-based clinical trials, which aim to reduce disparities and expand trial access nationwide.
