Anne S. Tsao, MD
      Anne S. Tsao, MD, is a professor in the Department of Thoracic/Head and Neck Medical Oncology at the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center (MDACC). She is the director of the Mesothelioma Program and the director of the Thoracic Chemo-Radiation Program at MDACC. She is a clinician-scientist and an expert in the treatment of patients with both thoracic and head and neck cancers. Dr. Tsao earned her medical degree from the University of Chicago Pritzker School of Medicine. She completed her internship and residency at Indiana University in Indiana and an additional fellowship at the University of Texas MDACC. She then joined on faculty at MDACC in the department of Thoracic/Head and Neck Medical Oncology. She is board certified in both internal medicine and medical oncology. Dr. Tsao has been involved in more than 100 publications in several high-impact journals and has several first and last-author publications in Journal of Clinical Oncology, CA Cancer, Cancer Epidemiology, Biomarkers & Prevention (CEBP), Journal of Thoracic Oncology, Cancer Cell, Nature Medicine Clinical Oncology, and Molecular Cancer Therapeutics. In articles in publications such as Journal of Clinical Oncology, Dr Tsao has discussed the impact of novel therapies, the importance of clinical trials, and controversial issues such as the use of extra-pleural pneumonectomy in the treatment of the disease. She has also campaigned for the use of immunotherapy for the treatment of malignant pleural mesothelioma. Dr Tsao has also performed studies involving smoking history and its impact on the prognosis of those with non-small cell lung cancers (NSCLC). She leads a multi-disciplinary program at MDACC for local-regionally advanced NSCLC with a focus on incorporating immunotherapies into this setting. Dr. Tsao and lectures nationally and internationally on these research subjects. Dr Tsao has been extremely successful, with numerous awards and publications. She has also received numerous awards, including an ASCO Merit Award, MD Anderson Achievement in Research Award, ASCO Young Investigator Award, ASCO Career Development Award, NIH Clinician Scientist K12 Award, and Head and Neck SPORE Career Development Award. She has served as Program Project Leader on several large grants, including the Department of Defense PROSPECT grant. Dr. Tsao is highly active in oncology societies both nationally and internationally. This includes serving on the Scientific Advisory Committee and chairing sessions for the American Radium Society, Chair of the Communications Committee for International Association for the Study of Lung Cancer (IASLC), and Mesothelioma Applied Research Foundation (MARF). She will co-Chair the 1st IASLC Mesothelioma Targeted Therapies meeting. She also serves on the SWOG Executive Lung Committee, SWOG Mesothelioma Steering Committee, DSMB for NRG Thoracic Oncology, and NRG Lung Executive Committee. For ASCO, she was selected to be in the ASCO Leadership Development Program, and she has subsequently been the track leader for the Cancer Education – Professional Development, track leader for the Cancer Education – Lung, served on the Professional Development Committee, ASCO Lifelong Learning Committee – MOC Lung Committee, and Government Relations Committee. She also assists ASCO/AACR in lobbying congressional leaders for improved research funding for cancer research.
